Since a large percent of people are afraid to go to the dentist, several sedation options have been introduced in the field of dentistry. At Smiles of Tulsa, Corbyn VanBrunt, DDS and can help calm you nerves through sedation dentistry, which also includes the use of intravenous or IV sedation.
What is IV Sedation?
IV sedation is a type of sedation that is prescribed to patients who have a low threshold for pain or have anxiety attacks when they have to undergo oral surgery.
This sedation is also known as “twilight” or conscious sedation, since it takes the patient numb to pain but does not put them completely to sleep. The sedative is administered through a fine needle that goes directly into your bloodstream.
The prick from the needle is often not painful at all, but if you are afraid of needles, we may apply a numbing cream to your hand.
The sedative makes you very relaxed and sleepy, but you will be able to breathe on your own and follow directions from the doctor. We will constantly be monitoring your blood pressure and oxygen levels during the surgery to ensure you do not experience any adverse effects from the sedative.
After the procedure, you may not remember the surgery clearly and you will feel lightheaded and groggy for some time. That is why we recommend you bring someone responsible with you to drive you home.
Preparing Yourself for IV Sedation
We will offer you advice on how you can prepare yourself for IV sedation before the surgery.
•
You should not drink or eat anything eight hours prior to the operation.
•
If you have been prescribed medication, you may take them with small sips of water.
•
We may also advise you to stop taking certain medication, like blood thinners, before the surgery.
•
You should wear loose and comfortable clothes and should not wear lipstick or facial jewelry during the appointment.
If you have any concerns regarding IV sedation, you can call us at (918) 891-3059 and we will inform you about the procedure.
