Did You Know We Can Do Several Types of Dental Cleanings?
Posted on 6/21/2021 by Dr. VanBrunt
We have several types of dental cleanings we provide patients, depending on their specific oral health needs and current oral health. The cleaning we suggest then will depend on the amount of tartar and plaque that need to be removed and the state of your teeth and gums.
Prophylaxis Cleanings
A routine cleaning is also called a prophylaxis cleaning. This cleaning is recommended for patients who require routine dental maintenance to ensure continued good oral health. When we perform this cleaning, we remove all the plaque on the teeth as well as the deeper and hardened calculus or tartar. We also remove surface stains. This professional cleaning supports regular hygiene at home, or brushing the teeth twice a day and flossing daily. The cleaning is often performed every 6 months, or twice a year.
Scaling and Root Planing (SRP)
A scaling and root planing (SRP) is done when patients show a high risk toward gum disease or already have the disease. Also called a deep cleaning, an SRP is done to remove tartar and plaque from the teeth and below the gum line. We may also plane or smooth the roots to prevent the future accumulation of tartar and plaque. If your gums are swollen or bleed, we will usually recommend an SRP.
Gross Debridement
A gross debridement allows us to see if there are any dental issues that we cannot see because of the accumulation of tartar and plaque. This type of cleaning is done for patients who have not had their teeth cleaned in over a year who have accumulated a good deal of plaque and calculus on the teeth. While a basic debridement does not take long to complete, a debridement for damaged teeth that have a large plaque build-up do take some time to perform. A professional dental cleaning can help greatly in improving your oral health. Give us a call today to schedule a professional cleaning and exam.
