Is Tooth Pain Psychological?

Posted on 8/22/2022 by Dr. VanBrunt
Is Tooth Pain Psychological?Toothaches are caused by many things. We instantly think of tooth decay when someone says they are suffering from a toothache. While tooth decay is the most common cause of toothaches, there are many other causes. Among the common causes of toothaches are tooth fractures, abscesses, and damaged fillings among others. While these physical causes of toothaches stand out, there are those who argue that toothaches can be psychological.

Psychological Causes of Toothaches

Toothaches like headaches have been proven to be psychological in some instances. Even though the psychological aspect might just be a trigger, it contributes to some toothaches. When a person is stressed, the tension in the nerves may cause the person to grind their teeth.

Clenching your jaw due to stress can cause aches and pain. When you clench your teeth together due to stress, you wear out the enamel, leading to some pain in your teeth. With that said, toothaches are not entirely psychological. The psychological aspects may only trigger the toothache.

Psychologically Triggered Toothache Causes

When you constantly suffer from psychologically triggered toothaches, it is advisable to look deeper into the real cause of the toothache. While tension in your nerves and head might be a cause of toothaches, this is not enough. There is a chance that you are suffering from an underlying condition that is causing the toothache. In most cases, you might be suffering from an internal issue that is not visible from the outside.

Among the underlying toothache causes are abscesses, fractured tooth or jaw, and gum infections among others. These are common causes of toothaches that can only be discovered after medical diagnosis. If you are constantly under tooth pain but do not know the exact causes, it will be in your best interest to get checked.
