Are Dental Surgeries Painful

Posted on 8/8/2022 by Dr. VanBrunt
Are Dental Surgeries PainfulThere is a perception that dental surgeries are very painful. This has made many people shy away from dental offices. The fear of dentists must be corrected by getting the facts right. While it is a fact that all surgeries may carry some form of pain, it is not true that dental surgeries are very painful. Like all types of surgeries, dental surgeries are done when the patient is under anesthesia. Therefore, the patient may not feel pain during the process.

How Painful is Dental Surgery

The pain you will feel when you undergo dental surgery is not from the actual surgery itself but what you will experience during the healing of the wound. After the drug used to numb the tooth for surgery fades out, you should expect to feel mild pain. In most cases, you will simply experience soreness and irritation.

How Long Does the Pain Last

Dental surgery pain should peak within 24 to 48 hours of the surgery. Within this time, you may feel soreness and the tooth may be unable to bite well. It is recommended to avoid tough foods during this period. After 48 hours, you may not feel any pain or soreness unless you aggravate the wound. To avoid such a problem, stick to your dentist's guidelines for the healing period.

Other Side Effects of Dental Surgery

Besides the pain experienced after surgery, you may face a few side effects. To start with, in some situations you will be required to have bed rest for at least a day before being allowed to go back home. During the healing process, you should also expect some side effects such as discomfort, tenderness, headaches, and dizziness among others. Some of these side effects are a result of the anesthesia you are put under for the surgery.
