Professional Cleanings
Professional cleanings performed by our registered dental hygienists are one of the simplest and most effective measures we have to protect and defend your oral health. Even if you take excellent care of your teeth at home, you’re still likely to miss a few things. On any given day, plaque and tartar are collecting on your teeth. Plaque is a sticky, invisible film that may inflame your gums, which could be the first sign of gingivitis. Tartar, or calculus, is hardened plaque that’s been allowed to collect on teeth, and it must be removed by professionals. Left unattended, plaque and tartar could develop into gum disease, also known as periodontal disease.
Professional cleanings done at regular intervals prescribed by Corbyn VanBrunt, DDS, based on your oral health needs, are the best defense we have against gum disease and other oral health concerns. It’s important to preserve your natural teeth, ideally for your lifetime. Cleanings will also remove stains that aren’t otherwise removed by your regular brushing and flossing. We may prescribe deep cleanings for patients who present signs of gum disease or have had previous periodontal treatments.
Dental Exams
After your cleanings, you can expect to see Corbyn VanBrunt, DDS for a comprehensive dental examination. The exam will usually include an digital X-ray. We use X-rays to help us detect what we can’t see right away, like decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. Corbyn VanBrunt, DDS will also check for signs of oral cancer by examining your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues and gums. We’ll evaluate any gum disease, tooth decay, and check on the status of any restorations such as fillings or crowns you may already have.
Consistent visits for cleanings and exams, including an oral cancer screening, help us detect problems during their early stages when they are most treatable. Left unattended, small concerns like gingivitis can become worse, and will eventually require more extensive, and more expensive, dental work to repair. Usually, we recommend our patients schedule their routine cleanings and exams twice a year, about every six months. Corbyn VanBrunt, DDS may suggest lengthening the time between visits if you have excellent oral health or may recommend more frequent visits if you are at higher risk for dental issues.
