Invisalign vs. Braces
Tulsa, OK

Close up of young woman holding clear aligner and braces demo from Smiles of Tulsa in Tulsa, OKBraces and Invisalign are two types of orthodontic appliances that can straighten the teeth of a patient. Although it is a common misconception that these appliances are only useful for aesthetics, the truth is that a properly aligned smile also plays a role in the prevention of oral health issues such as decay or jaw problems. At Smiles of Tulsa, we strive to help you gain the smile you deserve, and are glad to help you understand which of these orthodontic treatments may best suit your case.

What are Braces?

Braces have been the most common orthodontic treatment for decades now. You will most commonly hear of those that consist of metallic brackets, though it should be known that there are currently other variations such as ceramic or lingual braces. Ceramic braces feature tooth-colored brackets so they are capable of blending with your smile. Conversely, lingual braces are placed behind your teeth. The latter is usually reserved for specific cases.

How Do Braces Work?

Braces move the teeth in a safe and effective way, using brackets that are placed on each of them and that are joined by a metal wire. Each of these supports is placed with extreme caution so that each of the teeth can move to their respective place.

One of the main differences between braces and Invisalign is that braces cannot be removed by patients. They are quite sturdy and will do their work non-stop until your smile is aligned. However, it is important to note that because of this, proper oral hygiene and regular cleanings from our office are needed in order to prevent the accumulation of calculus beneath the braces.

What are Invisalign Clear Aligners?

For those who are looking for a much more subtle treatment, with an almost invisible style, Invisalign may be their best option. They are transparent denture aligners that are relatively new to the market, but have placed themselves as a worthy alternative to braces due to their record of amazing results.

How Does Invisalign Work?

The biggest appeal of this type of aligners, as is evident, is that they are almost unnoticeable. The transparent plastic aligners are manufactured to fit comfortably over the teeth, moving them slowly into a correct position without the need for metal brackets or cables.

Invisalign clear aligners apply almost as much force to teeth as braces do, with the benefit of being able to be removed when brushing your teeth. This makes oral hygiene easier, though this could also be a problem for patients who forget to put them back on afterward. For this, Invisalign will be most suitable for a patient that is responsible and that will commit to using it as indicated throughout the entire alignment process.

There are different types of dental appliances available, so patients can obtain the same results through the method they find most comfortable. If you or someone you know is in need of orthodontic treatment such as braces or Invisalign, our team at Smiles of Tulsa is prepared to inform you about the options available and guide you through each step of the process.
