The Implant Procedure
Dental implants can be used to replace a missing tooth, support a bridge, or support an entire arch of prosthetic teeth. At Smiles of Tulsa, we specialize in the implant procedure and can help restore the look and function of your smile. Corbyn VanBrunt, DDS is a respected member of the dental community, with the background and expertise to provide a comfortable and successful implant experience.
What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a metal appliance that serves as the root attachment for a prosthetic tooth. A small titanium screw is placed into the gums and attached to an extension known as an abutment. The abutment provides additional support for the restoration. In many cases, a dental implant is an ideal solution for replacing a missing tooth. Implants are a durable restoration that can be treated like your natural teeth. They can withstand immense bite pressure and prevent future bone deterioration. They are attached to natural-looking, discrete restorations that provide increased comfort, and can even improve your self-esteem.
Candidacy and Bone Grafting
Dental implants are so effective because they fuse to the bone in your jaw and capitalize on your existing support structure. However, the fusion process is only successful with the proper bone density and quantity. If a patient has undergone severe bone deterioration, we may need to perform a bone graft. During a bone graft, a small piece of bone is taken from another part of your body and surgically transplanted to your jawbone. It may take several months for the transplanted bone to heal properly.
Most patients are suitable candidates for dental implants. Talk to Corbyn VanBrunt, DDS to find out if dental implants are right for you.
What to Expect with the Implant Procedure
After we have determined you to be a suitable candidate for dental implants, we can establish a proper treatment plan.
Before the procedure, we use a local anesthetic to numb the area. In certain circumstances, we may use a form of sedation to reduce discomfort. Corbyn VanBrunt, DDS will remove any problematic teeth and prepare your gums for surgery. An incision will be made and a small hole will be drilled into your jaw to provide space for the implant. After the implant is placed, we will suture the incision. In certain situations, the abutment can be placed the same day as the implant.
After the Implant Procedure
The healing process can take three to six months. If a bone graft was performed, it might take significantly longer. Once the implant is fused, we will perform the second surgery to expose the implant and place the abutment. After a couple of weeks, we will take an impression and send it to the dental laboratory. There they will fabricate your final restoration. Once they finish, we can schedule another appointment and install the prosthesis. We'll provide an estimate how long the recovery process for implants will take during your first appointment.
Caring for an implant can be quite simple. Brush and floss as you normally would to avoid any oral health issues. Regular check-ups and cleanings can increase the life of your implant. Over time, we may need to repair or replace your restoration. With proper care, your implant can last a lifetime.
