Tooth loss has many causes. It can happen due to advanced gum disease. You can lose teeth as a result of facial trauma. You may even need to have teeth extracted due to severe damage or decay. When you lose your teeth, your entire life is affected. Missing teeth need to be replaced. If you are missing an entire arch, or both arches, of teeth, Smiles of Tulsa can help with complete dentures.

Effects of Tooth Loss

When you lose your teeth, several things happen:
•  Your smile suffers, which can affect your confidence.
•  Biting and chewing become more difficult.
•  Your digestion is affected, which can affect your overall nutrition.
It becomes more difficult to speak properly.
•  Your jawbone begins to change shape.

What are Complete Dentures?

Complete dentures are a removable prosthesis that is made to replace an entire arch, or both arches, of missing teeth. Dentures have been used to replace missing teeth for hundreds of years. While there have been numerous improvements made on dentures, making them more natural and more comfortable, the design is still similar. The dentures today consist of acrylic resin teeth that are set into a hard, gum colored acrylic base. The base rests directly on your gums, which provide your prosthetic teeth with support.

The Process for Getting Your Dentures

Getting complete dentures typically takes two separate visits. During your first appointment, any unhealthy teeth that remain in the jaw are removed. Once the teeth are removed, an impression of your mouth is taken. The impression is sent to our dental lab, where they design and create your custom dentures. It can take up to two weeks for your final dentures to be completed. Temporary dentures are provided while you wait, which can aid in restoring some of the functions of your teeth. When your dentures are completed, you will have your second appointment. At this appointment, your dentures are checked for fit before you leave with a set of fully functional new teeth.

Denture Care

Every night, your dentures should be removed for cleaning and left out overnight to soak. Before you take out your dentures, lay down a towel or fill your sink with water, which will provide a cushion in case you drop them. Brush your dentures with a soft bristled brush and denture paste. Avoid using toothpaste, as it can cause tiny microscopic scratches that can collect bacteria. After you have thoroughly cleaned your dentures, place them to soak in a denture cleaning solution. Before you go to bed, be sure to brush your gums, any remaining teeth in your mouth, and your tongue. Rinse your dentures before inserting them back into your mouth the next morning.

Benefits of Dentures

Dentures offer several benefits:
•  They restore the functions of your teeth, making it possible to eat and speak normally again.
•  Your digestion, and overall nutrition improve.
•  Your smile is improved, which improves your confidence.
